Our journey continues. We still dodge the dangers that are lurking around us. These dangers can takes us to our doom but we don't want that. Anything can happen out here. Space has no rules nor are there limits. The infinite that is seen from Earth up at the night sky extended far greater than one can imagine. No scale is large enough to compare with this beast. Numbers don't matter anymore. Let's take our home galaxy as an example. With an estimate of at least 300 billion stars, and a diameter of 100,000 light years long, our numbers become dust. We become smaller than what our own eyes can see. Our Sun is definitely big against our home.
Have a deep look at Earth. It's a tiny speck versus our Sun. Remember, we're far away from home and this is nothing compared to what space has in reserve. Our numbers are smaller whether it's in terms of size or distance. Let's zoom out to see in detail.
Our Sun might look huge from up close but we haven't seen much yet. See that giant? That star is a thousand times larger than our Sun! Now our Sun is the pixel, our Earth exists no more. To put VY Canis in scale, let's put VY Canis in the middle of our Solar System. It would extend out way passed Jupiter! That's how gigantic that star is! It wrecks us in numbers too!
Now let’s zoom out even more. Let’s see what our size really is compared to everything else out there. We must go far enough to see that. Our own eyes can’t help. We must travel farther. Pass the dangers that can end us. Pass what we already know. Lucky for us, we’re not home or else we wouldn’t be able to see this in scale. Space is about to get larger than what we originally thought it was. Space is already huge. It’s limitless. There are no final frontiers up here. It’s constantly changing. Space has a tons of life. Life that is waiting to be cherished, relished.
Remember how our planet Earth was a pixel in size against the sun? The that changed and the pixel became a the Sun once compared to VY Canis?. Well now look. Just look. Let this sink in. Out of everything we know in size ,it comes down to this. Earth is officially gone. So is VY Canis. The pixel now is our Milk Way galaxy. It’s no match against IC 1101. IC 1101 is six million light years in size!! We don’t exist anymore once compared to that. Numbers in space just keep growing while we keep getting smaller. Space has many secrets. Space has many surprises. The size of the celestial bodies in it have numbers that are unimaginable. It’s a perilous journey to be able to see the beauty of this beast. The endless place we call Space. Our Universe, it holds our home and home can’t come close to being the size of an atom when scaled.
It's looks beautiful doesn't it? Space is actively changing. It isn't still, it doesn't just simply exist holding us within one of it's open corners. Once we come to realize how vast it is, we begin to see that there's more to it than just stars and planets. Yes there are dangers out there, but not like the dangers we come to face day to day back in Earth. This is our escape from all our differences. Differences don't collide in space, asteroid and comets do. Thriving stars are out here with their new planets that are beginning to orbit. Shall we have a look at one of the new borns?
That is the start of another system. Nothing man made can compete with an explosion like that. This is the start of a celestial body. Yes, space is full of life. Life that is well beyond the reach of our own eyes. This is what space is. It's beautiful indeed but don't get too close, alright? That star is bursting in deadly radiation that can wipe us out in a flash. Space is perilous. It's deep, vast and much more.
A great example of the perils in space can be read from the book I'm reading, Apollo 13. I recently read how the crew had been through multiple explosions throughout their mission. These were chilling moments for the men since they didn't know else to expect. The perilous moments they endured could have killed them, but they didn't die. One of the astronauts retells his experience from inside the spaceship. He says,"All three astronauts looked at the clouds and fell quiet. It had been close to twenty-four hours since last nights sudden jolt and bang, and the sense memory of experience had begun to fade. But these ghostly figures extending from their ship reaching out into space brought it instantly back. It still wasn't clear what had gone wrong in the rear of their spacecraft, but lest they forget, it had gone a smoking mess out of a vehicle that was supposed to be all but indestructible." (Lovell & Kluger 238) We see how things intensified and that the dangers of space can be big or small. Those dangers can end up like the experience from Apollo 13, unpredictable with a chills running behind our backs.
Reflections: Personally as a reader I feel like I'm struggling a lot less when it comes to being distracted. I'm 95% focused now on my reading than before and from what I see, reading has had a positive effect in my life. It's improving my choice of vocab, I better understand the text and I enjoy reading.
